Each Veterans Day on November 11, the Government organized military parades and other commemorative events. They all begin at 11 am when the government signed an act of unconditional surrender of Germany.
People gather in large cemeteries and at memorials. The most significant event on Veterans Day is in a cemetery near Washington. Where the U.S. president pays respect at Arlington Cemetery, at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and then announces a moment of silence.
Every November 11, is Veterans Day, the day the First World War ended. A lot of countries celebrate the same day in many ways.
Initially, the holiday was dedicated only to the First World War – to congratulate and honor the American veterans of this war. Then it was called Armistice Day or Armistice. The first time it was celebrated in America in 1919, a year after the war. It happened when Germany and the allies signed an agreement to cease World War I hostilities of 1918. President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day.
Now November 11, 2019 is dedicated to veterans of all foreign wars. Because after the Second World War ended in 1945, America’s veteran organizations sent representatives to Congress to update the day. They offered to dedicate this day to all veterans, and at the same time, rename the holiday as Veterans Day. In 1954, President Dwight Eisenhower officially announced that November 11 was becoming a national holiday and changing its name.
A victory is not a single significant event but rather many small events.
Veterans and the public come out to pay their respects to all veterans. One event was Henry Langrehr, a World War II veteran who parachuted into the Battle of Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944. In recognition of his bravery, the French Government presented Henry Langrehr with its highest honor, delegating him a Knight of the Legion of Honor. These soldiers comprise “the greatest generation.” They represent the shared sense of friendship and support between soldiers and what it means to put “country before self.”
