Dehydration While Diving. How to Avoid Dehydration?
Dehydration while diving can be a severe problem, a diver is surrounded with millions of gallons of water. Dehydration, while diving occurs when a diver has inadequate water throughout the body. The majority of scuba diving takes place in saltwater. So, how to avoid dehydration while diving? With the Bubi bottle – diving bottle, it’s much more manageable.
Divers have contact with salt directly on their skin before, during, and after their dives. However, the most common cause of dehydration is simply through breathing. Normal breathing expels considerable moisture into the air. That’s obvious when you breath close to glass or mirror. Underwater breathing accelerates that effect because the air in scuba tanks is significantly drier than ordinary surface air. Just as heat flows from a warm body to a cooler one, moisture flows from wetter areas to the dryer source.
We think of running, cycling, and triathlons as physical activities where hydration is critical. But scuba diving does not seem to have that same critical need. Therefore, hydration tends to be downplayed by scuba divers, reduced to just a “good practice” when going diving.
If we don’t rinse off the saltwater thoroughly with fresh water, there will be small salt crystals on our skin and hair. Before or after the dive, we may be blown with salty ocean breeze or even salt spray when the boat hits waves. Since salt is gyroscopic, it can attract and hold water molecules. When it sits on our skin, it can pull water away from the skin tissue, where it quickly evaporates.
